When does LIFE begin?

I never asked myself this question since I’ve always thought that the answer is: since the time of conception, when male sperm meets woman egg. DUH…how can one ask this question? O boy…it turns out the answer is far more complicated than that…listen..

Honestly, my head hurts just by listening to this talk. I have never really questioned myself about this before. Then, I found this cool video…

To me personally, after watching this video, it reaffirms what I’ve always believed that LIFE begins at the conception as that is when a HUMAN BEING is created, when the 2 sets of the chromosomes (i.e. DNA) from the male and female meet and intertwine to form a NEW set of chromosomes that is unique to that BEING. Moreover, I’ve found another article titled “When Do HUMAN BEINGS Begin - Scientific Myths and Scientific Facts” by the American Bioethics Advisory Commission. Here’s an excerpt from it:

MYTH 1: “Pro-lifers claim that the abortion of a human embryo or a human fetus is wrong because it destroys human life. But human sperms and human ova are human life too. So pro-lifers would also have to say that the destruction of human sperms and human ova are abortions too - and that is ridiculous!”

FACT 1: As pointed out above in the background section, there is quite a difference, scientifically, between parts of a human being that only possess “human life” and a human embryo or human fetus that is an actual “human being.” Abortion is the destruction of a human being. Destroying a human sperm or a human oocyte would not constitute abortion, since neither are human beings. The issue is not when does human LIFE begin, but rather when does the life of every human BEING begin. A human kidney or liver, a human skin cell, a sperm or an oocyte all possess human LIFE, but they are not human BEINGS - they are only parts of a human being. If a single sperm or a single oocyte were implanted into a woman’s uterus, they would simply rot. They would not grow as human embryos or human fetuses who are human beings.

MYTH 2: “The product of fertilization is simply a ‘blob’, a ‘bunch of cells’, a ‘piece of the mother’s tissues’.”

FACT 2: As demonstrated above, the human embryonic organism formed at fertilization is a whole human being, and therefore it is not just a “blob” or a “bunch of cells.” This new human individual also has a mixture of both the mother’s and the father’s chromosomes, and therefore it is not just a “piece of the mother’s tissues.” Quoting Carlson:

… [T]hrough the mingling of maternal and paternal chromosomes, the zygote is a genetically unique product of chromosomal reassortment, which is important for the viability of any species. (emphasis added)

MYTH 3: “The immediate product of fertilization is just a ‘potential’ or a ‘possible’ human being - not a real existing human being.”

FACT 3: As demonstrated above, scientifically there is absolutely no question whatsoever that the immediate product of fertilization is a newly existing human being. A human zygote is a human being. It is NOT a “potential” or a “possible” human being.

MYTH 4: “A single-cell human zygote, or embryo, or fetus are not human beings, because they do not look like human beings.”

FACT 4: As all human embryologists know, a single-cell human zygote, or a more developed human embryo, or human fetus is a human being - and that that’s the way they are supposed to look at those particular periods of development.

MYTH 5: “The immediate product of fertilization is just an “it” - it is neither a girl nor a boy.”

FACT 5: The immediate product of fertilization is genetically already a girl or a boy - determined by the kind of sperm which fertilizes the oocyte. Quoting Carlson again:

…[T]he sex of the future embryo is determined by the chromosomal complement of the spermatozoon. (If the sperm contains 22 autosomes and 2 X chromosomes, the embryo will be a genetic female, and if it contains 22 autosomes and an X and a Y chromosome, the embryo will be a genetic male.)

Then, why can’t Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama answer the question straight? Is it really politically incorrect to say that LIFE begins at conception or when the heart is formed or when the head is formed…whatever…they are the leaders of this nation (or potential leader)! At least have some convictions! It’s not like you’re asked to explain the theory of relativism by Albert Einstein!

I may not be a deep thinker. I may not be a scholar. I may not be a professor. Hence I don’t have the nuance aspect of understanding things. What I am is a mother who feels really lucky and blessed that God has given her the most precious gift…a gift that not everyone that wants it can have…a gift that for some people are considered a burden that it must be terminated (WARNING: Only click this if you have a strong heart, in appropriate place i.e. not at work, and in an area where there are no children around you)…a gift that must be taken into consideration wisely whether you are ready or not for the responsibility it brings (in addition to the joy!)…

So if you ask me again: When does LIFE begin…or to be exact…when does a human BEING begin? I would answer: At the conception. Does that mean I dislike those that have different opinions? Absolutely NOT. I just disagree with them :) They are entitled to their opinion, I am entitled to mine.

It’s just my personal opinion, but I think that LIFE is so precious and it’s a God’s given right to human kind. So, is it right, to take the right to live away from ANYBODY, including a fetus/embryo? This is when it is important to be able to discern when Life begins to answer this question. A thing..a blob…can not have any rights. However, a human BEING has the God’s given right to live from the moment it’s created. If the thing does not have a right to live, the thing can be terminated at any cause. If it turns out that the thing is actually a human BEING, does terminating it equate to uumm…possibly…killing it? *** tick***tock***tick***tock***

Allright, since even Nancy and Barack are still confused up to this day in regards to when LIFE begins, let’s just celebrate LIFE and not fry our brains in our efforts to answer the question that even our leader and potential leader can not answer! No matter what side you’re on…this ad will make you pause for a moment and think…and probably cry a little…That’s what happened to me :)
